Take a look at this video of the tense competition between the USA and Russia young men in their compound competition. Well done USA with your silver medal finish and congratulations to the Russian Federation for their Gold medal!

I have the question mark above because I can’t find any external verification of the result! I must say that I’m mad!!! The USA is reported to win a gold, by a British news blog, and there’s nothing reported in the American news centers?!? No blogs? I’m having trouble even finding the official web site of the Archery World Championships. Is archery in such a sad state that it can’t create a decent web site? Am I just overlooking it? Is this not a big deal?

USA, who defeated the British team in the semi-finals, took the gold medal when they beat Mexico in the final.

Why isn’t Mexico going wild for a Silver medal? I’m really confused. Someone please help me out by clarifying where the official results are posted.

U.S. men, women win 4 x 400m gold

Archery competitor Khatuna Lorig, a native of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, was chosen to carry the flag for the United States at the closing ceremonies.

Lorig didn’t medal in the Games, but learned while competing here that her homeland was the site of fighting involving Georgian and Russian forces. She worried for her friends and family.

“As an athlete, I tried to concentrate on the competition,” Lorig said. “I finally was able to talk to them and I found out they were safe.

“That helped a great deal.”

Wunderle Sets Sights on Friday’s Final Day of Individual Competition

He will face Dong-Hyun Im of Korea in the round of eight at 11:48 a.m. on Friday.

The 41st seed, Wunderle beat #24 seed Eduardo Velez of Mexico 106-102 in the first round and then upset #9 seed Ilario Di Buo’ of Italy in a one arrow shootout on Wednesday. The score in the second match was tied at 108 after 12 arrows, but after Di Buo’ hit an eight on his first extra shot, Wunderle closed the match with a 10.

“I think I’ll need to do a little bit better in the next round to continue advancing,” Wunderle said after his opening two rounds on Wednesday. “This sport comes down to who’s shooting hot on given day, and I know if I have a good day, I’m capable of winning. I just have to try to make Friday a good day.”

We’re cheering for you Vic!

Lorig’s Olympics End in Individual Quarterfinals

The archers braved a cold rain throughout the match. After falling behind by three points through the first three arrows, Lorig never seem to get in a rhythm. She lost three more points over the next three shots before shooting even with Yun over the final three of the match.

“The rain affected me a little bit, but we train a lot in the rain. We even train in the cold rain. But it’s disrupting a little bit,” Lorig said. “You figure if the first arrow doesn’t go in the gold, you’re unsure if you should touch the sights or not. I actually shot really well, with the way I feel. It just wasn’t meant to be, I guess.”

Khatuna, you’ve made us all proud of you. Well done. We’ll see you back on Team USA in 2012.

Nichols, Lorig Set for Women’s Individual Competition Tuesday

“I go in each day just offering to do my best, just trying to give it my all, and that’s going to be the same game plan,” said Nichols. “I would have liked to perform better. But it’s archery; it changes from day to day and you never know what kind of outcome you’re going to get, so I feel good and confident going into the competition.”

It must have been a very frustrating day for Jennifer Nichols and Khatuna Lorig who finished 24th and 26th respectively. The US Women failed to make one of the 17 teams that go on to the elimination round.

News was made however, in that South Korean archer Park Sung-hyun and returning Olympic champion, tied the Olympic record with a shoot of 673. In fact Korean archers finished first, second and third. Great Britain had an excellent showing placing 7th and 8th.

In mens competition, USA archer Brady Ellison led the team with a 664 placing 15th, Butch Johnson and Victor Wunderle finish 40th and 41st with a 653 and 652 respectively.

Those scores are enough place the men in 10th place and earn one of the 12 spots to go on to the elimination round.
