Money isn’t everything … but it sure is nice. Once again The Easton Foundation has stepped up to the plate and is supporting our USA Archery program in a big way!

“On behalf of all USA Archery members we thank the Easton Foundations for their generous support again in 2010,” said Denise Parker, USA Archery CEO. “This financial commitment from the Easton Foundations allows us to sustain the momentum created in 2009 of reestablishing USA Archery as a premier leader worldwide. It also accelerates our long-range vision of fielding a competitive team for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and broadening the base of archers across the country.”

Our much appreciated thanks go out to The Easton Foundation in supporting our great sport!

2010 is really starting out with a bang of activity from USA Archery. In this article, the USA Archery High Performance Manager Robby Beyer lays out goals and plans for the elite archers.

The USA Archery business model is to establish and maintain high performance standards and objectives at all competitions for all athletes. To better establish and help us in continuing to reach these high objectives it takes regular medal performances to attract support for USA Archery.

It’s nice to see a comprehensive plan to support not only the existing elite team, but also to have a plan to grow the sport by supporting the archers and coaches from the bottom to the top.

USA Archery is now positioned to send teams abroad, expand support for grassroots initiatives, and further develop athletes’ and coaches’ skill sets.

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Robby Beyer as the new High Performance Manager for USA Archery. Although I may never get to meet Mr. Beyer since I move in the club level, I’m hoping that his efforts and input will help not only the world class USA archers, but those effects will filter down to the regional and club levels.

“Elite athlete support is my number one priority,” explains Beyer. “My desire is to provide the support services necessary to compete and succeed internationally for recurve and compound archers alike. I want to maintain open communication with athletes, the athlete advisory council and coaches in an effort to galvanize everyone together to accomplish our organizational goals for London 2012.”

USA Archery is looking to hire a contractor to fill a part-time JOAD Coordinator role. This position would be contracted for approximately 20 hours per week. Ideally this position would be filled by a person that is familiar with the JOAD program and is motivated to help grow the program by providing the energy, enthusiasm, determination, oversight and attention to detail that will make JOAD a competently managed program. It is USA Archery’s hope that this position grows into a full time JOAD coordinator position as funds increase.

Please join me in welcoming Denise Parker to the CEO position at USA Archery. Of course, she’s already a little bit settled in as she’s been “Acting CEO” for several months now. During her tenure, I’ve seen a marked increase in communication and openness from USA Archery. The changes that I’ve seen, I’ve liked. Keep up the good work Ms. Parker!

“I believe we made some progress over the past few months putting together a strategy and securing funding to help execute that plan,” explains CEO Parker. “We have much more work to accomplish, including filling a couple of key staffing positions, but I believe we are on our way to rebuilding the organization. I thank the Board for their confidence in me. I am humbled by all the support I have received and am very excited about the future of USA Archery.”

The Youth Olympic Games qualification is very limiting, as FITA will only allow three female recurve archers and three male recurve archers from any one country to compete in the trials process. Moreover, these individuals must be born between January 1, 1992 and December 31, 1993 AND have to be part of your team competing in the Youth World Championships.

The group is hopeful that there will be archers who make the team that will also qualify to compete in the Youth Olympic Games trials. If the U.S. team does not earn our two allotted slots at the Youth World Championships or cannot field a team for the qualification day, then a team will be sent to a continental qualifier for another attempt.

USA Archery has really come alive here recently. I know that there are critics out there but I’m seeing much more activity and publicity for archery than I have in the past. Congratulations to these nominees!

USA Archery selects coaches in several categories to be recognized for their special coaching contributions and accomplishments. These coaches are then placed in nomination to be considered for selection to the USOC Coach of the Year Program.

The USAA 2008 Coaches of the Year are:

• Michael Usherenko, Level IV Coach from Oakland, NJ, for National Coach of the Year,

• Michael Wichser, Monroe, WA for Developmental Coach of the Year,

• Larry Anderson, Bothell, WA for Volunteer Coach of the Year.

The 2009 World University Games will be held in Serbia, 2-12 July 2009. USA Archery will be funding a 3-person staff to support the 2009 WUG Team.

While USA archery establishes a new Coaches Development Committee and hires a new High Performance Manager, the need to move forward with staffing positions for the WUG team is necessary. For 2009, the procedure for Coach selection will be as it was in 2008.

Current plans are for athletes and team leaders to attend an athlete’s training camp prior to this event at the Univ of Connecticut. Team leaders will be asked to attend this training camp with the team.

I must admit that I’m relatively new to the inner workings of the NAA and the changes that they’re going through. Professor Liles is certainly not fond of the current incarnation of the NAA and the changes going on there.

Archery has a problem with leadership and the sustainability of the organizations. The roots of the problem are in the leadership, the issues of differing opinions, the problems with past practices. There is also some temerity in the different organizations for buy-in. The idea that the membership is more than supporting the very few is empty. The practice of the National Archery Association currently is to promogulate a ponzi scheme where all of the membership supports very few athletes who go to the Olympics. The wholesale changes to the coaching and high performance programs centralize and denigrate the efforts of smaller clubs. The governing processes and representation are woefully inadequate for a membership driven organization.

I’m hoping to have the opporunity to ask him some more specifics about the issues and changes to the NAA that he is making reference. I’m hoping that the NAA is open to criticism as long as criticism is supported and offered in the right light. Stay tuned.
