The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee, comprised of Directors from both the National Field Archery Association and the Easton Sports Development Foundation II, jointly decided the winners and amount for each of the winners. Among the criteria considered were the applicant’s grade point average, their prior year USAT ranking, and their participation in a number of national archery events or programs hosted by the NFAA, US Collegiate Archery, USA Archery, and NASP.

It pays to be part of the archery community. Loretta Sinclair just posted this over on the US Collegiate Archery forum page. If you have a chance, go over, look around, sign up, and contribute. Great information is to be had by sharing. It’s all up to us to revive the great sport of archery.

The only school that offers a specific archery scholarship is Claremont McKenna. You can get more info on that scholarship from the Claremont website.

Columbia University has a women’s varsity team. While they do not offer scholarships, they do put together grants, work study, and financial aid packages that have been attractive enough that quite a few top women archers are a part of that program. The coach of that program Derek Davis can be contacted at dd2148@columbia.edu The men at Columbia University are a sport recreation club and do not have the same benefits as the women….

The Clarke Sinclair Memorial Archery Scholarship provides scholarships between $500-$1000 each year. We are not yet accepting applications for 2009, but you can find information at www.clarkesinclair.org

The CAP will be offering 8 $500 scholarships in 2008 for the 2009 school year. More information will be posted on the CAP website soon.

There are some other very nice possibilities coming up — more info will be posted as it is available.

I can’t wait to hear more about what CAP has planned. Some great things are happening right now in regards to archery.

The NYTimes takes a look back on the aftermath of the Title IX affects, and find a couple sports live on. Sure, they quote that the Yale water polo team continues on, but is that realistic for most colleges? I’m all for the free market however. If a scholarshipped team isn’t warranted, then I don’t advocate continuing the scholarships. For archery, however, Title IX has been devastating effect on helping the best archers pay for a college education. Archery was different in that there were a good level of mens and womens scholarships available, now there are none. Archers will continue to go to college because typically they possess the skills and discipline that translate into excellent school work. The financial burden remains however.

Here’s the bottom line however, Title IX is here to stay. It is up to us to continue the great sport of archery, and it always was. It is one of our goals as a club, to eventually develop our own scholarship program. To give something, no doubt very little, but enough to buy some college books and to reward some of our archer students to pursue higher education. After all, archery wasn’t our primary goal as a club. Character development is our primary goal, archery just happens to be our vehicle.

Since then, all the eliminated teams have continued in one nonvarsity form or another. Some have competed at a high level, some have not. The archery club team won a national championship last season at the same level of competition it had competed at as a varsity squad.

If you’re reading this entry, you already know what a great sport archery is. How it can be enjoyed by kids and parents alike, regardless of age, sex, strength, or athletic ability. But lets talk money here for a minute. College prices have been increasing at a rate much higher than the rate of inflation for years now. So, can we combine the love of a great sport with some financial payoff? A small bit, I’m afraid to report. There aren’t any full ride scholarships like there are for other sports, but depending on the college or university, and depending on the scholarship, it can lessen the pain a bit.

My kids are still young, but I’ll let you in on my plan to get them into college. Big scholarships are few and far between, and that is for scholastic as well as athletic scholarships. I’m planning on having the kids submit for several (hundred) scholarships to help get college paid for. Several $500 scholarships add up to a good chunk of change. I’d be proud to take some advantage of available archery scholarships.

It appears as if there are several archery powerhouses, and archery friendly colleges around the United States. Unfortunately, Georgia appears to have only one college with an active archery program and that is at the club level: Georgia College and State University, in Milledgeville, GA. http://www.gcsu.edu/studentlife/intramuralsports.html

James Madison University used to have a varsity archery program, however the men’s and woman’s program was disbanded in July of 2007, to bring them into compliance with Title IX.
http://www.jmu.edu/jmuweb/general/news/general7490.shtml

So, in summary, here is my advice and comments: as far as scholarships go, apply and apply often. To be honest, there aren’t a lot of archery friendly schools here in the South Eastern part of the United States. On a more personal note, as we grow our archery club and start to hold tournaments, it’d be great to have one charity tournament to raise some funds for a Georgia Archery Scholarship. Our sport needs us, and our kids need us, and more than anything, our college funds need us.
