Hello Archers!

Tomorrow is the day for our 2nd Annual Charity Archery Tournament! Please come out, bring some cans of food and have a great time shooting archery, benefiting a great cause which is “The Place of Forsyth County”. The Place has a food bank that helps families in our community who are facing economic hardships. Won’t you help?

We’ve got a lot planned for tomorrow. We’ve got many fun stations including targets with candy, pumpkins to shoot at, 3D foam animal targets, and Flu-Flu arrows! Brand new for our club! In addition to these fun targets, we have “special prize” targets. We’ve got close to $1,000 worth of prizes donated this year and for an extra fee, you can shoot on the prize targets. We are offering shots on these targets for $1 and $5 each. Some of the prizes have a retail value of over $100! There will be a kids prize target where the kids can shoot until they win for the same $1 fee per arrow.

At the beginning of the video, you get a glimpse of the announcer. I’ve always wondered what he looked like. I always pictured Mike Rowe from the Discovery Channel in the USA. I guess it wasn’t far off from my impression, eh?

Two great archers in this competition.

This story has been bouncing around the Intertubes for a day or so now, but former USA Olympic Archery coach is heading to Great Britain to replace Peter Suk.

Brown will replace Peter Suk, who led Great Britain to the Beijing Olympics, where Team GB failed to collect a medal, after Alison Williamson had taken bronze at Athens 2004.

What struck me is the pressure that the British paper is already placing on the coach. Amazing. Perhaps unhealthy.

American Lloyd Brown has been handed the reins at Archery GB, charged with ensuring Great Britain do not leave the London 2012 Olympics empty-handed.

“Ensuring”? Really?!? There’s nothing assured in sports. Is this the tabloid mentality of Great Britain (and Europe) ? I like what Archery GB Performance Director Sara Symington says in this quote:

“We have hired a top class coach with a fantastic track record in Olympic success,” said Symington. “I am confident that Lloyd can bring out the very best in our elite archers, and make them very competitive at the London Olympics.

“We have some great talent, and with the right coach, the right environment and the right sports science support, then anything is possible.”

I wish the best of luck to Lloyd Brown. GBR without a doubt has many, many talented archers and combined with their new coach I wish them the best of luck. I want all archers to shoot to the very best of their ability and talents, no matter the country. The best of the best of the best for that particular week will prevail.

Korea vs Korea. Two great young archers.

Great shooting and competition for these compound archers. Gusty conditions from China.

We’ve got so much going on, I almost forgot that today, we will be holding our JOAD mini tournament at the park. Basically what this means is that our archers have a chance to shoot for JOAD pins! The kids love that as an incentive. Of course, we’ll be holding our normal beginners training as well so don’t let the fact that a tournament will be going on stop you from coming out if you have a youth interested in archery.

Date: 11/14/2009
Time: 3pm – 5pm
Location: Ducktown Park, Forsyth County, Georgia

NEXT WEEK!
Next week is our 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Charity Tournament. There’s an entrance fee of cans of food (Cash is accepted as well) and you can bring your “entrance fee” this week and get signed up early! Check out the web site for more detailed information.

TO OUR TEAM ARCHERS!
Our team archers have been going to more tournaments, doing more shooting than ever before. I’m so very proud of our team archers. However I’ve been noticing something. I’m starting to see the injury rates creeping up on us. The more shooting we do, the more soreness and injuries we’re going to have. As a club, I pledge to you that we’ll do a better job of warming up and stretching. I’ll be making a PDF as a download available soon and we’ll be doing warm ups before each practice. We’ll do this together and keep archery a fun sport. Injuries stink.

See you all later this afternoon!

Hello Archers!

On November 21st, 2009 we are pleased to announce our “2nd Annual Thanksgiving Charity Shoot”!

Do you know that 1 in 8 families in the USA are having difficulties in putting food on their tables. Georgia is one of the 10 worst states in the USA based on hunger statistics. You can help. You can help people in our own community. Our entrance “fee” into our Thanksgiving Charity Shoot is just 5 cans of food for the kids, and 8 cans of food for adults. You can bring in the cans early, and we’ll get you signed up for the charity shoot! No need to wait until the day of the tournament! Don’t have time to get some cans of food? No problem. The entrance fee for kids is $5, and $10 for adults.

Why would our club, an organization that struggles to purchase equipment to help kids (and parents) learn archery, hold a charity tournament that benefits another organization, a food pantry? Because we’re hoping to teach our members more than just archery, but to teach them discipline, friendship, camaraderie, family and a bit about being a contributing member of society. Archery is just our vehicle to this end. Sneaky, aren’t we?!? Seriously, as the temperature gets lower, and the economy continues to sputter along, there are many families in Forsyth County and the area that struggle to get enough to eat, that worry where that next meal will come from. Won’t you be a small part of helping a family in that situation? This year our charity is “The Place” that passes out food to many worthy families in our community. Take a look at their web site here: http://www.theplaceofforsyth.com/

We need your help in other ways too! During the 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Charity Shoot, we’re also hoping to have a special prize table. At this station kids and parents for a $1 fee, will be able to shoot on a target. If they shoot on a number, they’ll get the prize that corresponds to that number. The prize might be a good one (archery equipment, a flashlight, etc.) or it might be a “white elephant” gift (meant to be a funny gift) such as a plate of broccoli or perhaps a pet rock! If you, or your company, could donate some prizes for our table, that would be an awesome thing to help us raise funds for a good cause. We’ve already lined up some gifts from Timberghost (our local archery shop!), CULLY Technologies, LLC and others. Contact Ms. Allyne if you could donate something to the prize table! Let us know if you have any questions!

See you soon,
- Coach Kevin
