Congratulations to Samantha Pruitte and Garrett Abernethy for landing two of the twelve positions on the USA Junior Archery team to shoot at the world competition next month in Rzeszow, Poland.

Samantha Pruitte, a senior at Harlem high School who has been shooting competitive archery since she was 6, will join South Aiken High School sophomore Garrett Abernethy at the world competition next month in Rzeszow, Poland.

Garrett clinched his spot on the U.S. team during a competition held in Dubuque, Iowa, on Jan. 4, where he placed third in his division to land one of the three Junior Male Compound positions.

“I’ve only shot a bow about three of four times in my life and I’m not too bad at it,” said the marine. Lafitte, 25, is paralyzed from the waist down. He was involved in a terrible bus accident about a year ago. He says it’s been a tough recovery, but is thankful to be alive and ready to move forward.

This weekend, he and several other wounded marines are at the Olympic Training Center trying different sports and learning about the Paralympics. “They’re showing me that and giving me hopes and ambitions that I can still accomplish anything I set my mind do,” he said.

Close to 400 students throughout the state will compete on Friday, Feb. 13, in the third annual National Archery in the Schools Georgia State Tournament. The best-of-the-best from elementary, middle and high schools in 16 schools (from 13 counties) will convene in Perry for the tournament. The event will take place in the Miller Murphy Howard building near the West Gate of the Georgia National Fairgrounds.

Kayla DeBord is one of those people who always seems to have her eye on the bull’s-eye.

That focus is taking the 17-year-old to Rzeszow, Poland, where beginning on March 2 she will compete in the FITA World Indoor Championship.
