Archive for September, 2008

We’ve only been at this for a short time, and we’re already in the top 1,000 sports web blogs! We’re also the top archery blog on the web! Overall, we’re about the 20,000th most popular blog overall. Very exciting.

As you know, sports plays a disproportionate level of importance in our lives, so you know there are tons of web sites and blogs out there. Sure, we’re not a political web site, or a historical web site, but I like to think we’re a channel on building self esteem for the youth in our local community. Much of this is to inspire by reporting and linking to other inspiring stories about archery around the web.

Archery appeals to kids that don’t fit into other sports programs. I am constantly inspired by the kids in our program. I am very proud of them both as athletes, and as individuals. I will try not to let them down!

US Men Win Archery Bronze

The weather conditions changed throughout the tournament from sunny with a little wind to constant wind with a little rain. The weather had no impact on the Americans ability to record high scores. “The rain is normal for us,” says Stone. “I said ‘Bring it on.’” During the rain the Americans continued to score high, while the Brits faultered slightly.

“To win a medal with these guys is a great experience and great honor,” says Cross, a three-time Paralympian who earned his first Paralympic medal. “This will be a huge boost for disabled archery across the world. This is some of the best shooting I have ever seen at the Paralympics.”

Lindsey Carmichael

It is well past two in the morning and I’m still wired. It’s strange to
think that at the beginning of this very long day, I did not have a clue
what pain and pride awaited me. I did not have a medal. And that perhaps is
the strangest part—this thing that I’m still wearing around my neck, it has
a weight to it, a gravity of its own. I have grown so attached to it in the
hours since it was put around my neck, that I find it easy to imagine that
I’ve had it all along.

Paige Pearce

Thirteen-year-old Paige Pearce of Red Bluff is living her dream, and there is no stopping her.

Pearce has broken, and, or, currently holds over 85 National, State and Star Fita records.

And as if that is not impressive enough, on Aug. 4-10, Pearce competed in the Junior World Trials at the Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. and secured one of the three coveted positions on the Compound Cadet United States Junior World Team.

Pearce will be traveling with the team to Antalya, Turkey to compete in the Junior World Championships in October.

Alan Wills

I spoke out against GB head coach Peter Suk immediately after my quarter-final defeat at the Olympic Games and then retracted it on reflection in my blog later that day.

Since then, I’ve had more time to reflect and I stand by what I originally said and if a lot of things don’t get better, I will pack it in and that’s not me being a sore loser.

Concerns need to be raised for the benefit of the whole of GB archery – if we can push on, the funding will get there, if not, the sport goes back to no funding and fewer competitors.

A great time was had by all. We came up with a different type of game where the kids where shooting through the balloons to hit randomly placed values on post-its. Good fun and the kids learned something about scoring in a tournament as well. What a great 2007/2008. We’re looking forward to a great 2008/2009.

A huge thanks to Per Andersson of BK Friskyttarna, Sweden. He and some other compiled this list and posted to several forums around the web. I’ve taken the spreadsheet and converted it into a PDF document for you.

Equipment can’t buy you scores, but it sure is interesting to see what the best of the best choose to shoot. Sometime, I’d like to put together the cost of one of these rigs.

Let Per know if there are any adjustments to the list.

FITA President Becomes IOC Member

Dr. Erdener’s nomination was put forward by the IOC Executive Board at the SportAccord in Athens, Greece, last June. He is now the second FITA President to become an IOC Member but it is the first time in the capacity as International Federation’s (IF) President. Therefore, Dr. Erdener’s term as IOC Member is linked with his term as FITA President. FITA Honorary President, Mr James L. Easton, was appointed as an individual member at the IOC Session in Paris in 1994.
