The Longmont Times: Right On Target

“We’ve seen the program double in size over the last year,” Munoz said of the JOAD program at Archery in the Wild.

The local JOAD program is open to youths ages 6 to 18, he said, and draws up to 30 or more children during the school year. This year, in its first summer program, about a dozen kids — both boys and girls — show up to hit targets on Thursday nights with the local JOAD program, Munoz said.

He said the club aims to have three nights of instruction a month, “but we also try to have one fun shoot each month.”

For example, parents and children compete against each other, shooting targets to see who can rack up the most points, or the kids participate in a 3-D animal shoot followed by pizza or a cookout with their families.

It was a beautiful day for an archery tournament. I was especially happy about having my new Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS system to help me navigate to Conyers. Yes, I normally and commonly get lost.

We got there at about 8:30am and started helping to get set up. Shortly there after, the practice rounds started. The wind was going to be a factor. It was gusting up to about 20mph.

Logan was shooting at the 50, 40, and 30 meter distances. Griffin was shooting at 20,15, and 10 meter distances. It was impressive to see the equipment of the other archers. There were more compound shooters, but a really good number of recurve archers.

Logan started off a bit slow at the 50 meter range but picked it up at the shorter distances. He shot a 138 out of a possible 720 points. Griffin shot a 313 out of 720 points.

The boys said that they had a good time shooting. The Georgia games are only a couple of weeks away.

US Archer Nichols Aims for Olympic Gold

That same year in 1993, the Nichols children were introduced to the local Junior Olympic Archery Development Club.  Jennifer, now 25, has stayed with the sport for 15 years.

“I started competing and I loved competition. I just loved it,” she said. “And my scores would go up every time I competed. And I decided I just wanted to do it more.”

Multi-million-dollar archery center in Newberry inches closer to reality

The Easton Sports Development Foundation has committed $1.5 million for the construction of the archery center and the administrative area, while the city of Newberry will pay the remaining $900,000 for the construction of the community recreation side of the center, site prep and infrastructure.

The archery center has the potential to greatly impact Newberry’s economy, as people are expected to come from around the world to train at the center, one of just several in the country.

The center also will be a host to national and maybe international competitions.

The Daily Interlake: Controlled Explosion

Smith says he never has played golf, but the similarities between golf and field archery are clear.

“I think golf is the nearest sport to what we’re doing” with archery, he said.

Field archery involves a course of 24 targets of different sizes throughout rolling, wooded terrain. Archers have to shoot uphill and downhill at widely varying angles, often from uneven locations that require different stances.

“It’s never a nice level spot,” Smith said.

Field archers have to estimate distances and target angles, and the shot requires extreme body control and mental focus.

Check out the redesigned version of the USA Collegiate Archery Program. I know we have some kids that are preparing to head out to college. Perhaps this web site will provide some valuable information for our club members interested in continuing archery through college.
